The President of Nigeria has signed an executive decree establishing a national system for the supervision and taxation of cryptocurrencies, marking an important step in the development of the country’s digital economy. The new regulation provides for the creation of a specialized agency responsible for licensing, monitoring, and regulating all digital asset transactions within Nigeria.
According to official data, there are more than 22 million cryptocurrency users in the country, accounting for about 10% of the population. The new regulations require all platforms and services dealing with digital assets to undergo mandatory registration and comply with anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing standards. In addition, a flat tax rate is being introduced on profits from cryptocurrency transactions, which will increase revenue for the state budget and enhance the transparency of financial flows.
Authorities emphasize that the initiative is aimed at protecting investors and preventing fraud, as well as supporting innovation in the financial sector. Establishing a unified legal framework for cryptocurrency transactions will attract more investment and stimulate the development of fintech startups.
Experts note that the integration of national oversight and tax regulation will strengthen confidence in digital assets and enhance Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global fintech services market.
