A new chapter in Ethereum scaling
On March 13, an important event in the history of Ethereum took place β the successful launch of the Dencun hard fork on the mainnet. This step opens a new chapter in the development of the blockchain platform, as the update will increase data storage capacity and reduce costs.
One of the most important and anticipated features is EIP-4844. This part of the update includes the Proto-Danksharding option, which aims to scale the network by introducing a new type of transaction for transmitting large amounts of data (BLOB), which, in turn, promises a significant reduction in fees for second-layer solutions, particularly those using Rollups.
Analysts at IntoTheBlock predict that the update will lead to a significant reduction in transaction costs on platforms such as Arbitrum (from $2.02 to $0.40), Optimism (from $1.42 to $0.28), and the Base network (down to $0.01). The Polygon team is also optimistic about this update, emphasizing that rollup-based solutions, including zkEVM, Linea, Scroll, and zkSync, will benefit the most.
An important milestone on the path to the update was the activation of Dencun on the Goerli testnet on January 17, which resulted in a network fork. However, the developers quickly resolved the issue, fixing it within four hours.
The update was implemented smoothly on the Sepolia and Holesky networks (on January 31 and March 7, respectively), confirming the readiness for the mainnet upgrade.
Experts from Grayscale noted that Dencun is a key element for the "maturation" of the Ethereum network.
